Long-time RED runner Bryan Arnold suggested that I share some of his safety tips with folks for the upcoming running season.
In the interest of promoting an enjoyable running experience for everyone, it is important that we all are aware of and follow some basic rules. These rules are both for our safety as well as others that we share the road/trail with.
1. Run on the right side of the trail – no more than two abreast.
2. When running on a road, run against traffic on the left side of the road.
3. Pass others on their left hand side. As a courtesy you may call out “Passing on your left”.
4. We share the path with many other bikers, pedestrians, in-line skaters, etc that cause a number of concerns:
a. Runners must stay to the right allowing bikers to pass on our left
b. Runners should alert other runners of an approaching biker from ahead by shouting out “Bike up”.
c. Runners alert other runners of an approaching bike from behind by shouting out “Bike back”.
d. Be courteous when the path gets crowded and run single file.
5. Don’t run down the middle of the trail or road.
6. When running an out-and-back route, don’t make sudden u-turns at the half way point. Stop, step to the right allowing the trail to clear before making your u-turn.
7. If you stop, step off the path to your right.
8. Stay alert. Expect the unexpected. We see folks breaking the rules more often then we would like.
9. Be careful crossing the park bridges. They are slippery.
10. Be alert on blind curves and turns.
11. Wearing headphones are distracting and should be used cautiously.
12. Couple of courtesy signals you can use:
a. When someone calls out to you - ON YOUR LEFT … raise your left arm acknowledging to them you heard them
b. When transitioning from running to a walk break, raise your hands to alert the people behind you
